The Purple Thistle Launches its
YOUTH URBAN FARMING PROJECT
The Purple Thistle Centre in East Vancouver has launched a new project this spring with support from Vancouver’s Whole Foods Markets, MEC and the City of Vancouver.
Twenty-five low-income youth and friends have started farming unused industrial-area boulevard land on the Eastside of the city. The project is transforming one of the least attractive, most polluted areas of the city into viable food production space, while building local knowledge of food security, youth participation in the neighbourhood and re-imagining urban possibilities.
Please come and visit us on Earth Day, April 22nd at any of the four Whole Food Market locations in Vancouver where we will be participating in the stores’ 5% Day, distributing information about the project and talking with anyone interested about our work and plans.
Much gratitude to all our supporters and especially to Whole Food Markets for their generosity.

The Purple Thistle is now officially CLOSED until some time in September.
It is still possible to schedule a drop-in during this time, free of charge. Drop-ins will be contingent on someone from our summer crew agreeing to open and supervise the Thistle while you’re there.
Email ___ to send an email to us and we’ll figure it out and email you back. We’re open for the fall as of this edit.
Possible drop-in times are from 4-10pm every day.
First of all we want to greet you guys a Happy New Year!

The Thistle is a youth-run arts and activism centre. We operate in four main ways: We are open in the afternoons and evenings for drop-in. Please see signs on the door, big white board and website for hours. We run classes and projects of all kinds. There is lots of information available about what’s going on and how to sign up. If it isn’t totally obvious, ask someone.
We run full-time, paid training programs during the day, focused around arts, community work and/or publishing. If you are interested, write matt@purplethistle.ca Also, lots of groups, big and small, use the space for meetings, conferences, gatherings or as a work-space. You are welcome to meet here, just run it past the collective.

This 12-week class will involve a direct interaction with the surface of the film material, both in exposing and processing the image. Themes include working with the qualities of uncertainty and chance, as well as the tensions between the intentional and the unexpected, the crisp/clean and the muddled/messy. Techniques include solarization, toning, tinting, coffee/Vit C developer, cross processing, handmade sound, optical printing, etc. Theoretical readings and screenings will be an important part of the group experience. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas or works-in-progress.
